Marketing Yourself for an Athletic Scholarship
Is your high school student-athlete aspiring to play college golf?
Is the thought of the recruiting process overwhelming?
Are you struggling to know which schools to target?
Are you feeling the pressure of financing a college education?
| Over 20 years ago, my parents and I were in your shoes! I aspired to play college golf at the Division I level and had only been playing golf just over one year!
The thought of the recruiting process was overwhelming, not to mention the time and energy it was going to take to find the "best" school for me. There wasn't Internet, email or cell phones at my fingertips either. It was "snail mail" and a landline phone! After countless phone calls and letters to admissions offices and coaches, we were able to narrow down the schools that I wanted to target. I needed to find a school that not only matched my talent level, but also was a place where I could attain a scholarship. It was complicated, stressful, and exciting at the same time.Let me reassure you that even 20 years later, some aspects of the recruiting process still haven't changed. It remains a complex, complicated, stressful and exciting time in prospective student-athletes and their families lives. The Internet certainly makes it easier to research information, but the research process remains a daunting task. However, there is a better solution and way about approaching the recruiting process. There is a way that can save you time, energy and money. |
1. Student-Athlete Development
I will assess your current skill level and ability. We will develop seasonal practice plans in preparation for tournament play. I will evaluate your golf equipment and make suitable recommendations. We will discuss your course management skills and recommend resources related to strength training and sport psychology. If needed, we will discuss the selection of a swing/short game/putting coach (services do not include any form of instruction).
2. Competition
We will discuss and plan your tournament schedule for the year. After each event, we will evaluate your performance and monitor your progress through statistical analysis. If needed, I will educate you on junior golf ranking systems (AJGA, Golfweek, and Junior Golf Scoreboard)
3. Recruiting Issues*
I will educate you on recruiting terms and definitions and clarify NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, and Junior College levels. We will have an in depth discussion on the recruiting process, NLI signing, and scholarship eligibility. I will identify “best fit” colleges and programs. I will serve as a qualified reference for your candidacy. I will provide guidance in formulating your academic and golf resumes and assist with communication/marketing strategies with coaches/colleges and the timelines for this action. I will advise you on how to develop a swing, short game and putting video.
4. Academic Eligibility
I will define your core classes, discuss how your core GPA is calculated, and your eligibility timeline. At the appropriate time, you will register for the NCAA Clearinghouse or NAIA Eligibility Center. We will schedule your SAT/ACT test dates.
5. Transition Skills
We will discuss initial and follow-up communication skills, assess your self-image and attitude and make proper suggestions, assist you developing a well-balanced
lifestyle, discuss your support systems, and teach time management skills. We will create realistic goals and expectations and I will educate you on what to expect from college coaches and the college experience.
